Where in time.

The meaning changes only the duration of the time and chronological placement.
If you say
"when i read the book, I'll tell you how it ends."
That is a short fixed time.
"When I read a book I like to close my eyes and imagine the setting."
That is a continual life long occurance. Happening multiple times for short and long durations.

In other languages they have different tenses (perfect, passe simple, imparfait-french). English is not so concrete.

In this case it could mean either if you are reading the text. How you pronounce the word "read" will give it its meaning...
when I (reed) a book-present tense
when I (red) a book-past tense

" when i read a book,,,,,," could mean "everytime I read a book......." as in "everytime I read a book I fall asleep" or "when I read a book I fall asleep". The question is kinda broad and its hard to know exactly what you mean, but I hope I helped a little.

either "when i read a book about galaxies, i was really amaized by ...", or "when i read a book about galaxies, i get amaized by..."

this variation is because the verb "read" is in both, present and past!!! (couldn't you use a different verb?!!!"

enjoy ;)
