As raynwater said: Organic Matter is the key! And yes, you can make some better soil. Considering your locale [cough, cough, choke, choke....], use any container, or even a pile on the ground. But if you use a container, remember that air is a primary component of decomposition.

The other key element in making good soil [composting]: the Smaller the particles, the Faster it will decompose. [BTW, straw is NoT good; it takes an extraordinarily LonG time to decompose.]

Perfect additions to make your "dusty dirt" fertile are: eggs shells, coffee grounds, vegetable cuttings [raw], chopped up leaves, grass clippings, and yes, manure [but NoT dog or cat], and even newspaper [but shred it, or tear it up into pieces]. Do NoT add any grease or meat; best rule is not to put in anything that's been cooked.

The other "ingredient" you'll need is water. Keep the pile moist.

Composting [making Black Gold] is easy, as long as you remember the basics:
1. Small particles means faster decomposition;
2. Right ingredients means faster decomposition and optimum byproduct;
3. Remember the "do NoTs" [above].

Now, get out there, and make some Fertile Soil! [have FuN]

Compost your leftover rations. You could probably get a bunch of guys to help you.

Here's a link to a previous question about how to make a back yard composting pit.

Add organic material: rotten leaves, straw, animal manure (cow, horse, maybe camel) peat or sphagnum moss, Osmocoat (slow release fertilizer) if you can find it. Good luck and THANK YOU for keeping my skinny white girl buttox free. KISSES and HUGS!
