Turkey is a harsh miltaristic state. They have a facade of a democracy the army rules from behind the curtains. Their past genocides against Armenians, Pontian Greeks and Assyrians as well as the recent occupation of Cyprus and brutal suppresion of the Kurds in Southeast Turkey, the casus belli with Greece all point to a direction of a country that is a danger to its people and its neighbors. The turkish army in reality is made out of cowards as the only military operation they tried with a different country is invading tiny and defensless Cyprus. Through the cold war years Turkey was largely contained by the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Greece, Syria, Iran and Iraq.

Well history suggests "don't mess with Turkey".

They don't like any foreign power attempting to exert control on their land. Why did the USSR not mess with Turkey ? Cause the Turks know how to fight hard if a foreign power messes with them on their own turf - and had proved to Russian time over what fighters they could be in the past. Remember Gallipolli / WW1 ? No one messes with Turkey on their own soil.

As for extending their power beyond their own borders/areas of influence.. thankfully they are "soft" imo... they care most about their own borders. However the Cypriot issue is always very sensitive to them too.

A one million strong army, a country surrounded by traditional enemies. They have a motto: 'let them come'. A powerful nation, 'a hard power'
