For games you need a good Graphics card.
1 GB RAM would be ice topping on it.

The guy who said only processor really was missing a big component. 3GHz is plent fast enough, but you most definitely need more RAM. Even for a business computer 512k isn't really enough these days. Put a minimum of 1GB more ram in it.
However, probably the single biggest factor is the video card. You need a good video card. Why? Because it is its own RAM and it's own special processor just for displaying video. More and more games companies are relying on the power of the GPU or graphics processing unit.
Just find a good card just UNDER the ones that are truly top of the line. Here's one reviewed on CNET that's under $200, that's still pretty badass. 2 gigs of RAM and one of these would probably do the job. http://reviews.cnet.com/ATI_Radeon_X800_XL_256MB_PCI/4505-8902_7-31320650.html

yes a gig would be a good start but i would suggest as much ram as you can(most boards support at LEAST 2 gig which i'm sure yours does with a 3ghz cpu on it. yes as before metioned in other answer- the graphics card is important as it does a LOT of the work in games so i would suggest at the MINIMUM a 128mb card and ideally the biggest you can find(not allways the most expensive either) around 256 should be fine, go for NVIDIA orATI as they are well known and trusted brands that are quite evenly matched in performance so either is a good choice.

1 gig ram (minimum) also, new games are graphics hungry,so I would suggest a 256 vid card. 3Ghz should be ok to play most games that are out at the moment.
1 gig in australia should set u back approx $180.

Processor speed and memory are only two aspects towards the performance of a gaming machine. Memory prices vary depending on exactly what type of memory your motherboard supports, is it DDR, DDR2, Rambus etc. For the more modern games, you will undoubtedly need a mid to high end video card to ensure smooth seemless animation and an enjoyable experience plus a good responding high Xfer rate HDD. Modern games are very taxing on a computer, almost unarguably one of the most demanding of applications that can be run on a computer.

it would run, yet very poorly. also, possibility is, in case you in problem-free words have 512 MiB of ram, the different factors on your workstation are enormously old besides. you'd be purely right upgrading each and every thing, or purely figuring out to purchase a sparkling workstation. Sorry : (

Just as important if not more important is to have a good video card.
1 GB of RAM is minimum for gaming, 2 GB is recommended
but even 1 GB is useless if you are gated by your video card.
you need to ensure that it is a gaming card.

I would double the RAM, but all the big work is done by the graphics card and usually, the more expensive the better.
