I am American and have lived in Japan for nearly twenty years. There are lots of inexpensive eating places these days. It is not like years ago. It depends where you are going. If you are in the country you may have a harder time but it is not as expensive as you would expect. In a decent size city we have American fast food as well as all you can eat buffets which would run about $15 for lunch. I like to do that when I travel and skip breakfast and dinner, maybe a snack in my hotel room in the evening. Usually the hotel staff can speak some English and they are very helpful if you ask. Tell them your price range for dinner and they will give you some ideas as to what is accesable to you. Taxi and bus service in Japan is tops. Many times you can get a one day bus pass for less than $10 and travel all over the city to your hearts desire. Taxis can be expensive so try to use them only in a pinch. Many times your hotel will have a restaurant on the top floor. You can also go to the grocery store and get deli items. Lawson has pretty good food to buy and eat in your room or park but they are mainly lunch items. I wish I knew the purpose of your trip and where you will be traveling. I could help you out more if I knew.
My yahoo address is rorriannroch@yahoo.com. If you have any trouble please do not hesitate to contact me. I am leaving to spend the holidays in the states on the 22nd threw the 5th but I will have access to a computer except when in flight.

In Japan, you'll uncover a few humans who don't seem to be very welcoming to foreigners. They is probably not impolite to you instantly, however might forget about or ostracise you, to get their emotions throughout. I grew up in Tokyo, and at the moment, there have been very, only a few foreigners round. Nowadays, I most often see one or 2 practically day-to-day if im out and approximately. The "No-Gaijin" indicators that a few cultural areas have, are simplest more often than not since of both dangerous beyond studies with foreigners, the homeowners cant talk English and dont wish the quandary or a few places similar to bathing swimming pools, and individual/conventional temples are very sacred to many, as they include graves of ancestors who've gave up the ghost, and the Japanese like them being untouched, and uncover it intrusive when you've got hoardes of American travelers snapping photographs in their grandfathers headstone. But, you WILL have a few humans be overtly impolite, both as a result of drunkeness, or lack of knowledge. If you stayed a 12 months in Tokyo, you'll possibly simplest have one million or two situations wherein any individual ignores or is impolite to you. It is fitting very multi-cultural, as there are lots of English lecturers, and the more youthful new release adore western/American tradition. However, in rural places, many humans have not ever noticeable a gaijin aside from television, and if they're very ancient, they are going to nonetheless maintain grudges as a result of the conflict and nuclear bombs. On the opposite hand, the Chinese love foreigners. Their nation is swiftly developing, and so they appear to experience westerners experiencing their tradition, that's rather unknown to the typical European/American guy. And afterall, they're the biggest populace on the planet, so you'll meet all forms of humans.

Go native. Most Japanese are middle class and can't afford to eat like tourists.

If you have time to make friends with a few Japanese, tag along with them to parts of the cities they visit. You will find the food edible, a bit exotic, and much cheaper than at the places where tourists eat.

Many Japanese will not let a guest pay for anything, but don't count on that.
