just wanting to know was there only 8 tracks on the "8 tracker"

Do you mean one of the old 8-track decks?

I don't recall how many songs, but it was generally about an album's worth, although you could in theory shove as much tape in there as would fit.

I don't know of any 8-track recording machines that you can buy.

The 8-track never actually played back 8 tracks at a time. Instead you could switch between any two at any given time, giving you stereo, but only two tracks at once.

The "track" in eight track doesn't refer to "songs", but the different 'tracks' on the tape (like instrumental, vocals, drums, etc... are all 'tracks').

So no, there could be more or less than eight tracks.
