it is usually a problem witht the connector under the front seats. make sure that they are plugged in properly, have a fiddle with them moving them around. this is a common problem with cars, the lights should go off. it happens when the seats are moved or they get knocked.

Does it have an off-switch for the passenger airbag?
(Look on each edge of the dashboard, the part that's only visible when the door is open, or in the glovebox - may be key-operated).
If so, is it on or off?
The light may simply be telling you that the passenger airbag is turned off at the switch.
If this isn't the case, get a dealer to look at it - they can connect a computer to the airbag system and get a fault code from it.

I have a Honda Accord with the same problem. When I took it in to the Dealer they told me it was of course an electrical problem, but as long as that light is on your airbag "will not" deploy if you are in an accident. The light is there to let you know that for whatever reason, that part of your vehicle is not functioning. Heres the bad news they told me it would be about $700 to fix.

Your car's computer runs a check on the system each time it starts. It found a fault. probably a sensor in bumper. Try running your car into a tree. I bet it doesn't deploy. Seriously, this is a job for an expert. Much as I hate to send anyone to the dealer, they may be your best bet as Joe Mech has no test for that.

Theres a fault with it i would imagine, take it to Renault and they will run a diagnostic check on it, it may just be a case of reseting the light but it may be serious, you dont want it going off in your face, good luck

Does it say it is off? Mine always does.
I have a new Hyundai and the front passenger air bag will not go on unless there is sufficient weight in the seat.
It's to protect children. In an accident, the air bag could be fatal to children, so mine only works if an adult sits there. Then it will say air bag on.

It may just need re-setting by a mechanic, or the structure of your car may be damaged. Either way, you should get it checked out because if (god forbid) you have an accident the air bag may not inflate.

It could be doing its job, telling you there's a problem with the airbag! I'd get it checked professionally.
