Actually I CAN call monarchies silly. I just did!

And don't try to wiggle out of this by criticizing Bush. I voted for him twice before and I'd do it again!

A valid reason why it should end?

There's no valid reason why it should continue. That's why it should end!

Ive been asking that question all my life. I also ask what are they for and would we be any worse off without them. No-one has given a sensible answer yet and I'm an octogenarian.

You think it's silly because you don't understand it. There has been a Monarchy in England for about twelve hundred years. The Police and the Armed Forces ultimately report to the Monarchy, and there is a reason for this; it is to prevent a rogue Government with a massive majority in the House of Commons from trying to take absolute control (Totalitarianism), and thereby, to undermine Democracy and the Capitalist System. The Monarch has, with the help of the Armed Forces, to right to kick out such a government. Also, the Monarchy represents the continuity and traditions of this ancient land in an apolitical way, something that self serving, here today gone tomorrow, career politicians cannot do. The Monarchy is also head of the Commonwealth Countries, about fifty two, I think. The whole machinery is too complex for me to try to explain in a forum like this. Yours, is a very uniformed, shallow and simplistic view of the Monarchy. Learn more about it before you criticise it. Bear in mind also, that the only people who want to get rid of it in this country, are rabid left wingers, who want to take absolute power. I would also add, that I am not one of those children on this site that criticises G W Bush, because I don't have a problem with him, and even if I had, I would still respect the office of President. Some of your own people need to remember that too.The Monarchy is inextricably linked to the history and traditions of this country, including the Aristocracy. Destroy it, and you erase much of the past. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I may not be the strongest Royalist on the planet. But I am pleased we have a Monarchy.
A lot of countries have a Monarchy, not just the UK.
Maybe you are jealous because we have a tradition and a history that gives us some kind of identity.
At least our Monarchy aren't going round killing innocent people just because of a few terrorists.
Nope...the Monarchy isn't silly, but voting for a complete w**ker like Bush is.

Anyway, what you have said is totally disrespectful to all those that died in the first and second world wars (From Britain) they fought for (at the time) king and country and for freedom.

Oh dear - I can see from your additional comments that you do indeed vote George Bush !!!!!!!!!

Go to your local library (the big place with lots of books) and actually read up on British History (they may have a version on tape) and THEN you will understand why the British monarchy is so important.

(By the way the translation of the word monarchy is 'one leader' - therefore the USA has a monarchy too, although not of royal blood)

I make no apology for being rude - A lot of people reading your question will actually find it offensive.

they are envisioned favourite to have a minimum of two children an inheritor and a spare, even more desirable so the fellow who's maximum likely going to grow to be King or Queen. That stated for sure infertility can strike everybody and none human beings are particular to have children. So say William and Kate aren't to any extent further blessed with children, then Harry’s little ones if he has any (that are valid) would ultimately grow to be King or Queen, once William and Harry were both deceased. If he didn’t have any (little ones) then it may visit Princess Beatrice and Eungines children (in the journey that they have got any) and so on. The British Monracy has excess of 1000 human beings of their line of succession.

Why would we want to. The monarchy is our roots and our heritage. Our queen has been around longer than the majority of people here have been alive. Crappy governments can come and go but the royal family bring stability to England ( not to mention millions of pounds) p eople who call them spongers are idiots they are rich in their own right and the money they get is for the upkeep of the palaces ,which we would have to pay for anyway and for the expenses representing the country . all being said they are something we have that is special .Any way whats your problem you just sound a bit jealous

Stormer...

Why would you attempt to incite anger?

I know and understand very little about the British Monarchy but what I do know is it is walking history and it is their legacy. In a sense they are living monuments to England. I think it is wonderful that they have held onto that piece of history and that it is alive and thriving.

Your voicing your opinion on what they should or should not do rivals the British having the right to tell us what to do with the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Mount Rushmore or the Statue of Liberty.

Do the rest of us Americans a favor and don't make matters worse with your immature drivel.

As for those of you that are quick to toss insults back at this person, you aren't much better.

And... I am one American that is not jealous of your having a Monarchy to look up to. I just tend to think that we should respect each others heritage and respect each others cultures.

PS... You know, in a sense they are my monarchy as well. My ancestors came to America from Kent in England in the early 1630's. So your monarchy is part of my heritage as well.

Stormer... you never know, could be yours as well. Show alittle respect.

The prime minister is our executive head of state, equivalent to the American president, and I'd get rid of our present one yesterday if I could. Our monarch is a symbolic head of state and has no say in the day to day running of the UK. so getting rid of the monarchy would have little or no effect, other than we might end up with a president, and looking at other presidents around the world that could be a bad move. Might I suggest that as an American you put your own country in order and mind your own business where the UK is concerned

I find your question ,quite offencive. It is a proud part of the British way of life. The amount of money the British
Monarchy costs the British taxpayers is nothing compared to the money they attract from tourists that come to the British Isles. Politicians either American or British are only in Government to fill their own boots and
do not give a damn about the general public.
And a very Bah-Humbug to you to.

How can we end that which does not exist?

We have a monarchy. I fail to see why it's silly though.
Your entire "argument" seems to consist of

"It's silly because I say so, and it should end because I say so".

Try coming up with a cogent argument next time.

For all those whinging about how the Royal Family "sponges" off the taxpayer. They don't. Plain and simple. Crown Estates revenue, plus the tourist income (yes, it DOES count) far exceeds the money paid out on the Civil List. By about a factor of ten.

For someone who is (presumably) from a country with a pathetic 300 years of history, no culture beyond hollywood and commercialisation, a (by your own citizen's account) failing society, an imbecile of a president (who you VOTED for!) you sure can dish it out!

The Queen is one of the most respected world leaders around, and when she talks EVERYONE pays attention. When Bush talks the only people who give a damn are 51% of the Americans population and Blair's cabinet.

So when you feel like criticising someone else's system of government, how about you get some presidents who know that they're doing - instead of being from a corrupt family who made their money from being gangsters (Kennedy), a corrupt man who swindled the US out of billions (Nixon) - oh, and a corrupt incompetant liar who is responsible for the deaths of a hundred thousand iraqis and thousands of US troops.

America is not special. America is not the land of the brave. And America is CERTAINLY not the land of the free. You are just like everyone else, except a bigger bully.
