I've noticed alot of people thinking from an adults point of view so I would like to offer you a childrens view being that I have experienced a similar event when I was a child. I would discuss this matter with you parents and sister. It was your sons day, and you should explain to them how hurt you and your son are. Explain the situation rationally and avoid a fight. Talk civilly and ask them to spend special time with your son and when special events like such occur, to give the appropriate attention to the appropriate child. As for your husbands family, that's more difficult. I have first hand experience with this type of event. In my family I( was the youngest, all of my cousins were 10-20 years older then me. My aunts and uncles would always celebrate birthdays and send gifts up until the time their children turned 18. (After 18, we no longer do birthdays and gifts) After their children became adults, they stop sending me cards and even calling. It was as if I didn't exist and I was still a very young child. My parents were hurt they way you and your husband are because they had always been so close with my father's side of the family. Due to my aunts and uncles lack of consideration, my parents taught me never to expect anything, that when you do get something it will be extra special, but when you don't its not a big deal. I would recommend teaching your son that even though he is young. You can't change your husband's family but you can alter your sons view of them by this. He wont be mad about not receiving anything, just understanding to the situation. And it may help in the future, because he wont feel resentment towards them. Good luck in what ever you decide! : )
