Hi,

I am a Japanese and live in Japan having worked in the graphic design industry.
In here, most of the workers in this industry work for over 14~16 hours everyday (and sometimes all night) and, in most cases, employees don't get paid for the extra hours.
It's common knowledge in Japan that a designer usually has to work longer, harder and a salary is lower than other jobs and thus some workers change their jobs as they can't find hope in their future so to speak.
Of course there're some exceptions, like getting a high salary or don't have to work for that long etc.., but it's quite few.

And I wonder if design firms in other countries (like in the U.S.) also work this hard or...?

Any opinions or information would be appreciated.

People work very hard in designing, as it's required to create the best product, but they're paid good with overtime too.

The Japanese people work harder then most of the nations.
In most of the big firms in the US situated in the big cities, you'll work 10~12 hours a day. In Europe you'll work even less.
Try google "graphic designer jobs", and you'll learn more about opportunities, basic salaries and more...
