I havn't had any cravings for food, but very strange cravings for the smell of , Polish. Petrol and tar! Everytime i am at the petrol station i have to wind down the window just so i can get a slight whiff of it, and i will deliberatley polish my furniture about twice a day so i can smell yhe polish. Its just the scent i love!

Same here! Weird huh?

I've been craving the scent of:

Nail polish
Paint
Gasoline
Windex
Shampoo
Hair dye
Nail salons

It's called PICA (which is cravings for non-food items during pregnancy) and it is not uncommon during pregnancy.

It is possible that it could be from Iron deficiency or another sort of deficiency (though I don't have an iron deficiency). My doctor said some women just get it while pregnant. Try not to smell/eat any of those things, though it may be really tempting!

Good luck, and congrats :)

Actually, having this sort of craving is not uncommon; however it does effect the child, the chemicals and all. Some people EAT clay and things of that nature, though I have never experienced these types of cravings I have heard about them, so make sure your Doctor knows about them. With my first I craved lemons and anything to do with lemons, like lemon pudding. With my second I craved watermelons, though they are extremely hard to find in the winter. With my third, fourth, and fifth I craved garden salads. With my sixth I just plain craved FOOD, so I tried to control it to healthy food only.

I didn't have any cravings, just had to eat one more sandwich every night than I was used to from before. But my smell got acute, some smells I just could not stand like the smell of tulips. Who's ever heard that tulips smell anything?!? Well the did, smelled awful and I hated it. Tulips used to be my favourite, and now are agiain, but not when pregnant! Just awful.
But I have always liked the smell of petrol, what's strange about that?

Hi,

The smell of polish is common, infact i used to tlike the smell of petrol and play-do.And later on in pregnacy i used to go down to my mother-in laws fridge and scoop up ice cubes and crunch on them..the very act used to bring me comfort..i was also craving sex a lot ,but my partner was cautious and very protective..men do get like this.

you may also be polishing your furniture simlpy because of the "nestting instinct"...i used to clean more towards the end of my pregnacy..even hoover the curtains, and kept on looking at the baby box and re-arranging things..waiting for things to start can be worse..you get boared..but walking and relaxation helps.

take care...Janine on Dartmoor.

I'm 27 weeks pregnant and have no real food or smell or any other cravings. I was getting worried as most people have some! They tell me some do, some don't!!

I'm craving Salt and Malt Vinegar McCoy's crisps at the moment, but it's still early days for me, I'm sure I'll want something else soon. I don't care what type of sandwhich I get for lunch today from the deli, as long as it has English mustard on it!

Donuts & chocolate nemos. I ate them about 5 times a week till the baby came out. But I did take all my vit.s and ate properly so my boy came out well.
Be careful how much you smell what you like though. There are things - like what your enjoying smelling - that can be harmful if smelled to much.

I got obsessed with the smell of petrol too - wonderful smell!! My friend, though, got obsessed with picking the limescale out of her kettle and eating it!! Her doctor diagnosed some sort of vitamin deficiency and gave her tablets - but she still had the odd 'treat' - yuk!!

I'm not pregnant now; but when I was pregnant with my son, I wanted Taco Bell and peanut M&Ms.
Never did have scent associated cravings, though.

Not pregnant now, but when I was. . .
Always loved dill pickles, mad about them, but could hardly eat them when I was pregnant.
When I was expecting my son, I couldn't get enough peppermint candy ice cream. Since it's difficult to find except during the holidays, I'm lucky he was a December baby. I still love peppermint candy ice cream, but it has special meaning for me now.
