I believe it can also mean "lots of luck". So look at its context to see if "laughing out loud" works first, if not then "lots of luck". I think some people think it's also "lots of love".

LOL is soo over used. it may make me grin or smile, even snicker, but rarely laugh out loud. does anyone really roll on the floor laughing over such trivial stuff? I have never even heard of someones butt falling off from laughter (lmao)
Most of the time people type that drivel because they are to lazy, or disinterested to respond, yet feel obligated to type something.
to me when I see lol etc..I just figure it brought a smile, maybe snicker, and roflmao means they are insecure people trying to 1 up your lol or rofl like they actually p***d their pants because they read something funny.
