If you are looking for a franchise, McDonald's is by far the most expensive and hardest to obtain. If you are a female or a minority the companies have more programs for these people. You may want to look into another type besides McDonald's. You can expect to pay over a half million for a good location for some of the giants. Subway, Ice Cream Parlors (BR32), pizza companies and some fried chicken franchises have a lower financial requirements. Besides the financial requirement most companies prefer that you have had worked in an unit of theirs. Plan on long hours, low pay to start and lots of hurdles. I would expect you to be able to get your own franchise in less than 10 years. But if you can hang in there you can make a good living.

In the town where I live McDonalds is the only fast food restaurant and it only opened here about two weeks ago. I haven't been and don't really intend to. When I do stop at a McDonald's it's because I've got a train connection in someplace like Verona or Florence and only have a few minutes to grab something quick.
