Stuck between a rock and a hard place!!

It's actually a rock at the very bottom of Spain - but ruled by England. Just across the sea, not more than 30 minutes sail away, is Morrocco and the gateway to Africa. I've been there, walked the underground tunnels ands run away from the scary monkeys. It's hot, not much room and full of squaddies! Morrocco is great though!

Gibraltar is the small piece of land that sits at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, and who's control historically meant control over ship traffic between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Gibraltar (aka the Rock of Gibraltar) sits adjacent to Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, yet it is under the control of the UK (much to the annoyance of the Spanish,)

Gibraltar is a UK overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The territory shares a land border with the province of Cádiz in Andalusia, Spain to the north. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a British naval base. It is probably most famous for the geological formation, the Rock of Gibraltar.

The name of the territory is derived from the original Arabic name Jabal Ţāriq, meaning "mountain of Tariq". It refers to the Berber Umayyad general Tariq ibn-Ziyad, who led the Moorish invasion of Iberia in 711. Earlier, it was known as Mons Calpe, one of the Pillars of Hercules. Today, Gibraltar is known colloquially as "Gib" or "the Rock".

The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a major issue of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations. Spain requests the return of sovereignty, ceded by Spain in perpetuity in 1713. Any transfer has been consistently and totally rejected by almost all Gibraltarians.
