I have both consoles and I have found that both are very good systems. However I would suggest that you look at buying either Xbox360 or PS3. this will give you the most up to date piece of hardware available. the Xbox is Internet ready and their games seem to be mainly war based games whereas PS3 is mainly sports. It could also be suggested that you try the Wii from Nintendo. With it's new controllers you can get a workout as you play. I suggest you go to Toys R Us and play on the different consoles and see what you like.

xbox games are aimed more at adults and teens with a large number of shooting and sporting games, if you have teenagers this would be a good choice

ps2 has more games suitable for the young kids in the family with cool add ons like singstar, eyetoy and buzz, also a lot more roleplaying games like the Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire series.

find out from your kids what kind of games they like to play before making a decision, there are a lot of games that are available on both, but there is also some that are exclusive on each console, also find out what their friends have so they can borrow games from them!!!

the good thing about xbox, the original one, get it chipped and get a 250Gb harddrive put in it, rent games and copy them directly to the harddrive, same with dvd's, never buy a game ever again, it will save you heaps of money in the long term

for price i would say playstation
for family orientated games i would say playstation because of the interactive games such as singstar, buzz, dancemat...etc
playstation also has a wider selection of games than Xbox.
the controllers are smaller and easier to use than the Xbos ones which are quite large.
also a playstation is easier to set up and play than an Xbox
hope i helped.
