While controversy over today's war probably seems intense I don't think it was anything compared to Vietnam. Today we are all fairly used to our Presidents declaring war on people. Back during Vietnam it was a pretty new idea. The war was predicated on the Gulf of Tonkin resolution which was based on a bogus naval attack on US forces. Americans didnt know where Vietnam was or why we cared if they were Communists. At least today a significant part of the country beleives that we are fighting terrorism somehow. Also eventually Vietnam brought about some gigantic peace demonstrations. We havent seen anything on that scale yet. Anyway that's my opinion.

I agree with baldisbea...Vietnam. He said it all, I'll just add one thought; the controversy was so intense and prolific, it deeply affected the moral and mind set of our guys while they were still there. And when and if they came home, there was the sense they had been there in vain. No soldier should ever have to feel that way.
