There's a big iranian population here in cali,and there's this iranian girl at my gym who carries a regular workout towel with her,but when she is in certain places like a certain excersize station,she will drape the towel over her head.I'm wondering(for anyone who is muslim or anyone who knows)if this has some symbolic meaning behind it and if it is a certain custom that muslim women perform in public.

You mean like cover her hair, tucking in the towel behind her ears?
That's chador.
It's the Iranian version of the Muslim hijab.
I ain't a Muslim, but I've been all over those places and know their customs..
She must be doing this the moment she comes to a place where men are also present, am I right? The women only areas are where she takes it off, because that's the zenana, where chador need not be worn.

It is habit or tradition and also an istruction from Allah the only one God in Surah 7 Al Araaf verse 26.Surah 24 An Nuur verse 31 and Surah 33 Al Ahzab verse 59 in the holy Qur'an that muslim women when they are going out in public should wear clothes that is called jilbab which covered whole of their bodies from toes up to hair and maintain their privys and eyes except to their muhrim (their close relatives who can not be married).By wearing this cloth muslim woman will be easily recognized and she will not be disturbed or annoyed by naughty man.

Some women by choice can wear a head scarf! but if she doesnt wear it and you see her hair then she just put it for some other reason! nothing symbolic!
by the way those women who cover their hair are pretty conservetive, so you most likely wont see them at your gym!

i don't think so, mostly ppl do that to concentrate more on the exercise, and to use their full potential. I see a lot of ppl do it.

it may be because there are men around they dont cover if its just girls but if a man comes in she may cover her head then.
