I just got hired as a cashier @ Whole Foods a month ago. I was doing good until last week, for some FREAK reason my register was $150 short and I got written up. I don't know WHAT the mistake I made was - maybe I gave too much cash on a debit cashback, or maybe miscounted, hell maybe some of my big bills fell out of my till.

The bottom line is, what tips can you suggest for being accurate and good as a cashier???

$150 Short? Wow!

1. Count the till before your shift and alert your Manager of any discrepensies. New Tills are supposed to have a starting amount,

2. When handing change to customers. Give the coins first then the bills.

3, If a customer hands you cash. Place the money on top of the tiltill and leave it there until you the customer recieves his change. For example a Customers total comes to $6.35 and he gives you a $10 bill. Say "Out of 10?" so the customer hears you say it. This is to prevent the customer from saying "I gave you 20!"

4. Be aware of short change artists. These guys are professional and can leave the store with $200 from your register and you may not even realise it. For example someone may buy a candybar at your register and give you $100. You open the drawer and make change then they might say "Oh Here I just found a 5. Use this instead" The point is they will keep trading bills or request change is different donominations to get you confused and distracted. If anytime you become confused close your drawer and call your MOD immediately.

5. Mark all large bills to test for counterfiet according to your company policy.

6. Smile and be polite to all customers. You will be amazed how far this can get you.

7. I hope you never experience this but if you are being held at gun point hand over all the money immediately.

Wow. If you have such a good work ethic that you would actually ask for tips on how to be a better cashier, than you will truly be a wealthy and successful person one day. Probably in a career that has nothing to do with cashiering.

My only tip. Dont steal. They probably have hidden cameras watching the cashiers.

When you give people their change, you need to count it once coming out of the till, and again when you give it to the customer.

Keep track of your big bills.

Learn to use the 10-key by touch.

Double and triple check the receipt before you get change.

Count the money and checks twice before you put anything in the register. Basically, count everything twice.

DO NOT EVER LET ANYONE ELSE USE YOUR REGISTER.

Hope that helps.
