These dishes were from the 1910 area. The lady who sold them to me said they were her grandmas and they just had so much they could not keep everything she had....About a month ago I meet a women at a tea for our Church who was talking about her Great Aunt and how she had this great collection of dinner ware and that the other cousins were upset that the Aunts and other relatives just sold all of this at yard sale.....I asked her some questions about this dinner ware and it is the Great Aunts stuff.....Should I make a nice gift box and give it to her for Christmas or Keep it? Please be serious with your answers.....

Misschatea:

- Now that we are going to be talking seriously here dear: What the heck is the 1910 "area"? Do you mean "era"?

- The dishes are now yours, dear - period. Do with them as "YOU" please. In other words, give them back to the old lady as a Christmas present, but only if it pleases YOU. A gift of heart (or even an act of charity) MUST come purely from the heart and NOT some skewed sense of moral obligation.

- Even if you gave them back to the old lady, how can you be sure that those "darn" cousins (or whoever it was that put them up for sale in the first place) won't turn around and do the same thing all over again? It seems to me that the poor lady (for some reason or other) is no longer in charge of her own life, much less in control of the destiny of her belongings (if in fact they still actually belong to her).

- I would if I were you, buy the old lady a smaller (less bulky) personal present instead (preferably something that she can wear or put up in her room) in the same ballpark price as the cost of the plates and present it to her for Christmas. I am sure you would make her day, and in some small measure make up for what might have been taken from her by her relatives. That way the balance of karma (if you will) will be stored at least on your part - but again, do it only if YOUR heart so demands it, and NOT out of any sense of guilt or pity.

I would give it to her. But if there are a lot of cousins that want it, there may be some in fighting. But perhaps they only want pieces as remembrances. I Really would give it back it's a bit of a family heirloom.

Technically the dishes are yours now. But it would be incredibly nice if you gave them back, tis the season to be giving and all that. I would give them back just becuase i love the "warm fuzzy" feeling of doing something nice...

If you truely like this person then you should explain the situation to her and offer to let her have them for what you paid for them. You can just give them to her but why should you be out for something that you had no control over. Just be honest with her.
