You need to be able to switch your short term memory in to long term memory. The best way to do this is to keep looking at the matterial (not for like 10 hours straight) but look at it, read it, make sure you undertand it, go off and do something else and within 24 hours go back and reread it, you're more likey to remember key facts by doing this, keep it up, it's a great study tip.

The brain stores information according to necessity. We also have a system which filters out unnecessary information. This being so, the way to improve the long-term memory is to trick the brain into thinking the information is vitally important. There are many tricks you can use. One of the most successful is to read out loud and pretend to be an actor reading a script or a businessman giving a speech. It also helps to use good intonation.

Memory is the retention of information over time through:

Encoding-getting information into memory. This is accomplished through one of the five senses being stimulated.

Storage – retaining information over time. Memory is being stored all the time. The parts of the brain involved in storing memory are the hippocampi. We may not remember what we stored but memory improving techniques will help extract the stored memory when needed.

Retrieval – taking information out of storage. When memory storage is taking place we often do not remember it. When we retrieve memory it takes a cue from something that we sometimes subconsciously used to code it when it was stored. It may be a name like Mr. Hill and we think of about a church being on a hill when we stored it. When we retrieve the name, we relate it to the church which is on the hill and then we extract from or memory the name Mr. Hill.

The memory works by association. If you have nothing to associate with then you will have a harder time remembering. There are memory improving techniques that give us ways to improve memory with simple tasks. One of the easiest ways for me to remember is to use rhymes or acronyms. The use of words is also helpful in improving memory. The word “HOMES” was used when I was in elementary school to help me remember the five great lakes which are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. It is called a mnemonic technique, which means assisting or intended to assist memory.

I always had trouble with this and it helped me if I read a few sentences and then asked myself questions to help me then I also tried to picture the events as they talked about them and put myself in the story. Practice makes perfect!
