Lucas claims that he did not have the technology to start at the beginning. He really didn't even have it to start where he did and had to create new movie technology. And this is why he rereleased the originals as a special edition, with the material he did not have the budget or technology for placed where they were sipposed to have appeared in the original script. He wouldn't make the first films if he couldn't do them right, and almost cut alot of Yoda's scenes in the prequils because of lack of technology, but luckily figures it out last minute. He was also supposed to make episode VII, VIII, IX, but decided against them because after all these years he does not want Star Wars to be his entire life.

At the time that the original Star Wars movies were made George Lucas had a very hard time getting funding, most did not think it would succeed. Also it added to the level of mystery for most since many didn't bother to learn the backstory. Otherwise most of what you learn in 4,5 and 6 you would already know from seeing the first three. It actually worked better backwards in many ways but I wish it hadn't been 20 some years apart.

When George Lucas made the first Star Wars film, he and the studio figured it for a one film event, no parts, no sequels---because the movie drew most of it's inspiration from movie adventure serials of the 1940's, Lucas decided to present the film as if it were just one chapter of an ongoing serial, obviously not the first chapter, because so much was going on without introductions---so, "Chapter IV" it became---it was only later that the concept of six, or maybe nine films might be made.

George Lucas didn't have the technology in the 70's to do Episode I. He thought Episode IV would be better to do.

From a budgetary and storytelling perspective,George Lucas decided to go with "Episode IV" as the first movie,as it's success (or failure) would decide the fate of the rest of the series...He was right...

lucas wanted to use the better story first so that he would have a fan base for the other 3, cuz he knew the technology would get better later he didnt want to do all 6 at once, and he decided IV-VI had the better story, so he went with that, cuz if he did the wrong ones first and they bombed he woudlnt of been able to do the other 3

They claim that they didn't have the needed technology for the first three, but if you ask me, too much cgi is what ruined the movies.
