Why did the Asian Crisis raise such a global concern?

What can be learned from the Asian countries’ experience with the crisis which might be used for students and managers in International business?

There is a lot to be learned from the NICs and Asian Tigers... it raised a global concern because one it showed that IMF suggestions of import-substitution for developing countries was actually wrong (something we also learned when Latin American economies crumbled when they followed IMF guidelines), second it showed the ability for export-led growth to still be pausible in the modern world, albeit with government guidelines, and third because when the asian crisis happened there was a certain amount of interdependence between the West and the East, so obviously there was trouble.
