There were two Secret Wars series. In the first one, the Beyonder brought a bunch of heroes and villains to a world he created and watched them do battle. He was interested in learning about conflict.

The Beyonder was basically his own sentient universe. (Think of Eternity, Galactus, Chaos, Order, the In Betweener and All Those Other Cosmically Powerful Guys put together.) When the accident that gave Owen Reeces his powers as Molecule Man happened, a pinhole opened up between his universe and ours. (Some of the Beyonder's power leaked through and gave Owen his power.) The Beyonder was fascinated by the concept of a universe where he was not everything that existed, and wanted to study it.

After the first Secret Wars, where Dr. Doom basically tried to steal the Beyonder's power (and got tricked into releasing it later) and all the heroes and villains returned to Earth, the Beyonder came to Earth to try to live and act as a human to understand better. That was Secret Wars II.

At the end, in a story taken directly from Roger Zelazny's For A Breath I Tarry, the Beyonder made a machine so that he could be born into a human body instead of just inhabiting one he made, so he could understand helplessness.

That was the opportunity that the heroes had been waiting for. The Beyonder was SO powerful, and SO dangerous, that they cold not possibly affect him. But when he voluntarily reduced his power and self-awareness to an infant form, the heroes killed him.

All the Beyonder's energy went shooting off into space in one huge bolt (and eventually, they say, started a universe through evolution and stuff.) That was about the time that the Marvel New Universe got started, with such titles as Star Brand, DP7, etc. There had to have been some link in that the 'White Event' that suddenly gave powers to people on that Earth, though they tried to pass it off later as an attempt by the prior holder of the Star Brand to get rid of his power.

There was another folllow up to the SWII where it was revealed that the Beyonder and Owen Reece, the Molecule Man were originally supposed to be parts of one being, an immature Cosmic Cube, so they joined and called itself Cubix, oslt.

They had some FF isue where the FF were being studied by Cubix and another immature Cosmic Cube. You'd think that if these guys were so powerful, they could just read everybody's mind and not have to study us any more. Sheesh.

The original Secret Wars was one of the first crossover events in comics. It featured all the major Marvel heroes and villains of the time, including Spiderman. Basically, a powerful alien wanted to see who would win in combat, the heroes or the villains. Spiderman was transported to this alien planet where he hung out with all the other heroes, but unfortunately got his costume ripped in battle. For a replacement, he found a black ball, the alien symbiote, which became his new black costume, and later, Venom. This was one of the longest lasting and most important effects from Secret Wars. Also, Galactus in general ruined the alien's plan.

wait a minute Doubleb. I remember Galactus trying to take on the Beyonder in the beginning of Secret Wars. I remember Galactus consuming his own homeworld for extra energy, but that energy was stolen by Dr Doom. Doom then fought the Beyonder and even though nearly destroyed, he managed to usurp the Beyond's power (nearly) as well. Other than Galactus' homeworld supplying the energy and Klaw being held in its walls to make an apparatus for Doom to use to absorb that energy, Galactus had little or nothing to do with the Beyonders plans
