Get a router. They're cheap, small, and easy to set up. I have a DI-804 and it has an integrated 4 port switch along with a firewall.

The simplest and easiest way is to purchase a hub. Connect the WAN port of the hub to the cable modem and the desktop and laptop to the LAN ports of the hub. For added security, you can use a router/hub combo (which I think is all they sell these days anyways)

you can get a hub and conect both computer to it called (hard wiired) with a cat cable or if in different rooms then wireless network them. what you would need is a wireless router and a wireless card for one of the computers,
