Red China is an economic giant and a military power. Thus, the US had no choice but to recognize it for purposes of trade and for military cooperation for peace in this world.

perhaps he recognized the need for open disscussion and US presidents don't have the authority to allow or disallow the UN to do anything. The accusation would be that he supported it.

2 points for Tricky Dick.......one of the good things he did during his presidency despite watergate. Economic reasons I suppose.
