I beleive it ended because the great humn experiment in communism proved itself to be innefective and unable to be maintained. The Soviet Union crumbled from within under the massiv eweight of a starving populace, decrepit infrastructure and an outdated military that was really only a shell of what it was supposed to be. Soldeirrs in the USSR often went without pay, and sometimes even without food. And because of the totalitarian system one was never allowed to admit something was wrong. Factory not producing enough? Lie about it, or else. Decade after decade of underproducing while covering it up made the Soviets look like this manufacturing giant, but in reality they were just barely scraping by. The CIA grossly overestimated the Soviet miltary for the same reason. A large proportion of Soviet military equipemtn did not run are was short of critical parts. Finally, there wa sjust enough exposure to western culture for some of the people to see what they DIDNT have and they realized they were being cheated by their economy and lied to by their government. They wanted more. They deserved more. Eventually it all just caught up to them.

Hope this helps.

The Cold War ended because Gorbachev wanted to reform Communism, but he couldn't. Also, the former Soviet countries, like the Baltic states, Poland and Eastern Europe, they had their own democratic independence movements. The Soviet Union couldn't sustain themself because the were bankrupt in economic means.

It is said that the arms race drained the Soviets as well as the war in Afghanistan. But it isn't really over, it's just starting up again. The conflict inflicted on Lebanon has never really ended.
Syria is supported by Russia, still, and Israel by the US.

Russia has used foreign investors to build its energy sector. Now it's taking it back from the private companies. Russia now supplies much energy to Europe and it can do what it did to Ukraine last winter: turn it off.

They never play nice.

Ronald Reagan had the nerve to place medium range ballistic missiles in Europe. This showed his resolve to strengthen the military position of the free world against the soviets. Our navy was expanded greatly and for the first time the U.S. signaled it's intention to defend against missile attacks. Also news of the great economic progress and technological advances of the free Reagan economy, was very demoralizing to soviets at all levels of their society. Weakened spiritually and economically, the Russians are still a threat to free people, but with further resolve this too will change.
