Obesity is a complex issue. Proper modelling of correct nutriton by the parents has a great effect in shaping children in their formative years. You rarely see an obese child with fit parents. Working parents I know who are so busy and tired take the easy way out and let their children on a daily basis eat at fast food places. The children are propagandized by what they see in the commercials as being desirable and demand this diet from their parents.

A few months ago I had a play date at the local "Chuck 'E' Cheese" and witnessed this for myself. I ordered a small pizza for my 2 1/2 year old son and myself and noticed a very heavy boy (about 180lbs) who looked to be around 12 years of age and a very heavy father ordering as well. After my pizza was delivered I noticed that each of them had a large pizza and they both made short work of their large pizzas. I only took the time to observe because the were so obese and being diabetic myself I know about high blood pressure and cholesterol and was amazed that this was considered okay to them. A single slice of pizza has enormous amounts of cholesterol, carbs and fat and his father was just enabling him to consume a whole large pizza and I was sickened by that. Yes you can do bad things to your body but enabling your kids is a different story all together. It was extreme but alarming to me.

I would never agree that obesity is hereditary, but I will say that the eating habits of parents and family will have a heavy influence on a child within the household.
