First of all move the decimal over so that all numbers are to the left of the decimal. You now have 360/12. 12 does not go into 3 but does go into 36 3 times. 12 times 3 is 36 36 minus 36 is 0. Now you carry the 0 down and have 00 12 goes into 00 0 times so you put a 0 next to the three and your answer is 30. That may be confusing because I can't actually write it out. I did include a site I just looked up that will hopefully offer more help.

Yes, there are many ways to simplify it. But I suppose you're being given this as a test of the long division process... it's kind of hard to write out since any space at the front of each line will get eaten. But I'll do my best.

First step is to multiply both figures by 100 to get rid of the decimal point in the denominator (1.20). So we have 3600 / 120. (Normally you would immediately reduce this to 360/12, and then divide by common factors to get 30 directly, but I'm assuming you're not supposed to here.)

I'll use dots like this: ....... at the beginning of lines to get the right spacing. Ignore them. I'll adjust them so that the final post looks correct on my system, but I can't guarantee it will be aligned on yours.

120 ) 3600

120 doesn't go into 3 or 36, but it does go into 360. In fact, it goes into 360 three times, with no remainder:

............3
120 ) 3600
......- 360
........-----
...........0

(The 3 should be above the first 0 in 3600, and the 360 should be aligned with the start of the 3600. The 0 should be underneath the 0 in 360.)

Now we bring down the next digit:

............3
120 ) 3600
......- 360 *
........-----
...........00

Now we have 120 into 0, which obviously goes 0 times:

............30
120 ) 3600
......- 360 *
........-----
...........00

If you want to be REALLY formal, you can show another multiplication and subtraction, but that's not normally required at this stage.

You can do some tricks here:
1.20=1+1/5=6/5
36/(6/5)=36*5/6= 6*5=30

36/1.2
Multiply Numerator and Denominator by 10, then u will get,

36*10/1.2*10 = 360/12 = 30
