I know I am good at my job but still seem to lack confidence in front of my colleagues. It is ridiculous as I have been in my chosen profession for many years and have had my knowledge proved many times. I want to ask how I can gain more confidence in front of my colleagues and peers?

Many a time it so happens that you feel low with out any particular reason. Maybe you need a change of job.If that is not possible the best thing to d o is to believe that you are excellent, (your knowledge has been proved many times) walk with your head straight, and keep telling your self how good you are. Remind yourself of the various successful experiences you have had. Finally why care so much about others? You are what you think you are.

Try following 2 things :-
1. Keep a portable mirror on your work place/desk. Whenever you get time, look into it and say " I am the best in my job and produce good results ".
2. Deliver your job oriented voluntary presentations to colleagues and seniors at least once a month. You may start with short simple presentations of 10 minutes duration and subsequently can enhance the duration in coming months. Make use of all available presentation aids like multimedia overhead projector and charts etc. Never be afraid of committing mistakes since these are part of a normal life. Own your mistakes and ultimate good results due to corrective actions, taken by you.

Fear. Sounds like you fear your colleagues (sp?). Fear of rejection?, Loss of love?, fear of failure?, Its a very powerful, and negative emotion that can bring very bad things into your life from all aspects (make you clumsy and look bad, or preoccupy your mind, bring stress levels up, hell maybe even cause cancer, who knows) . What I would do, is try to chase all negative feelings away while your not at work, I think that the power of positive self-affirmations would do great things for you and its a lot cheaper than therapy. Stay away from all negativity, and be VERY happy for the things you already have in your life. Remember to have gratitude for everything - why? because this will make you happy, and its hard to lack confidence when your happy. Feel Good!
In fact watch the movie The Secret, It will cost $4.95, but it is well worth it (try to trust me , even though you don't know me)

I have the same problem especially since I'm new on the job. People think I'm shy so its easy to live up to the title. I try to break out of it by visiting my co-workers cubicles/floors and having simple convos. Both about work and outside of work issues. Don't be afraid to share your opinion with others as long as it doesn't undermine those around you. Break the ice! Also go to any company outings available. Holiday parties should be coming up.

Usually a lack of confidence comes from a fear of our peers rejecting us. People who define success as making sure no one gets mad at me live in fear and lack confidence. People who defins success as making sure the goal is accomplished can be bullies and fear mongers but usually don't lack confidence. The skill is in finding the middle ground.

Maybe it's not you it's the surroundings, you might want to think about using your skills somewhere else. It's easier to look for a job when you have one and you don't need to tell anyone you are looking.Just a thought.

You might have to ask yourself: Why am I not confident? Then address that issue.
