all depends on what you like and what size tank you get. NO goldfish (or any fish) should be kept in bowls. levels of ammonia and nitrate build up so fast... it's not good for them. even the smallest goldfish need at least a 10 gallon tank when full grown. that is for one or two goldfish, common and small.

I've always loved Ryukins, but they can get up to 6"-10" and need 20gallons AT LEAST. and that's just for one. if you'd like 3 or 4 goldfish I'd suggest getting a 30-40gallon tank and then pick a few types that you like. just be sure to get a good filter and test kits for ammonia, pH, nitrate, ect...

GAH! Some of the answers on this thread scare me! First thing you need to realize is that goldfish are BIG fish with the potential to reach up to 12in in length and live for a very long time (the oldest on record lives in England and is around 42!), so housing as others have mentioned is a concern. Fancy goldfish (Orandas, Ryukins, Fantails, Lionheads, etc) need at least ten gallons per fish to thrive (some recommend more); not only can they get big, but they produce ALOT of waste and if the ammonia levels arn't kept in check they can die rather quickly.

Common goldfish (often called feeders, carnival fish, etc), contrary to popular beleif are NOT small fish and in fact can get bigger than Fancies. They are fast fish and need alot of room to manuver and excersize so a general rule is 20 gallons per fish with the preference being toward length in a tank rather than height. For more information on caring for goldfish check out Kokosgoldfish.com. There's alot of great info there with a fantastic forum full of tons of people who love GF and are more than willing to lend a helping hand with any questions you may have.

Now! With all that boring stuff said, as to what kind of GF to get? Personally, I'm having a love affair with wens right now, big bubbly puffy ones that cover the whole face! I LOVE lionheads and oranda's with good wen growth are fantastic too. They're so cute; they're like little aquatic puppydogs! Good luck with your new fishy freind!

It depends on if it is a bowl or tank your keeping them in. If it's a fish bowl, then usually common goldfish or feeder goldfish would work because they are small enough to survive. And that their living conditions are usually plain, suitable for a bowl.

If it's a tank, then fancier goldfish such as Lionhead, Black Moore, Pearlscale would work.

first you need to tell us what you plan on keeping them in, then we could help you select the types of goldfish that would do best in that setting

25 cent feeder fish - best bargain for some B.A. fish. I've had feeder fish live for many many years, 5 years, and that was in an outdoor basin with rare cleaning, etc.

it's so lovely to have fish at home! i would personally recommend you to have red or gold fish which are not too small in shape.
