Girls only- the ileum (pelvis) widens for pregnancy- guys should stay relatively stay the same. On top of that, girls naturally gain fat on their hips and abdomen area (though not too much) and guys gain muscle on their shoulders/arms. All this varies to the extent though, depending on your diet and genetics.

for women only
this is to help during the pregnancy, since humans have a large head, the birth of a baby is a dangerous experience, and nature has to help out by widening the hips of the ladies

More obvious in girls. It's a response to estrogen.
But do rememeber that boys produce some estrogen and girls produce testosterone, so sometimes the effects that you expect in girls can appear in boys and vice versa. So it's not at all uncommon for boys to experience a certain amount of fat deposition on the hips and a certain amount of breast development. And it's very common for girls to develop a moustache at puberty. Sometimes these "opposite sex" characteristics disappear, sometimes they don't.
