I have noticed a bad smell, like rotten eggs, in my house that comes and goes over the past 2 or 3 days. It was first contained to my living room area downstairs but now I can smell it upstairs as well. I checked and I don't have natural gas. Everything is my house is electric. Also, my water doesn't smell either. It just seems to be a transient smell. Could this be connected to my electric central heating and air system. Lately, it has been making a weird car putting or lurging type noise (hard to describe) and it also hasn't been blowing hot air more of a warm slightly cool air.
Any ideas?

I didn't think about this until just now, but the past 4 or 5 days I have been hearing this loud swooshing like noise that is coming from somewhere in my house or maybe the neighbors (I can't tell). It sounds like someone turned the water on full blast and quickly turned it off again. I hear it randomly during the day. It will happen and then 10 or 20 minutes later it will happen again. Maybe like 1 or 2 times a day. I don't know if that is related to this problem or not.

Have you opened up the heater to look inside?
There should be two access panels held in place by screws.
One for the electrical and one for the heating "element(s)".
Check to see if the filter is dirty first.
Most people don't check the filter very often.
It sits below the heating "element".
They should be changed once/twice a year.
If its dirty replace it. And make sure it fits snuggly into place.
Filters that don't fit properly are the main cause of elements getting dirty.
This can drasticaly reduce the life of the unit.
The heating elelments look like the radiator from a car.
There are usually two in an A-frame position.
You should be able to see both the top and the bottom of these heating elements.
Look inside to see if they are clogged with lint or other debris.
If they are clogged (but only lightly) try to clean them with a toothbrush by gently brushing the foils to remove the debris. If the are quite dirty spray them lightly with water and use the toothbrush to carefully remove the lint.
Be very careful, the foils are easily bent and can cut you.
If this doesn't solve the problem it' likely a switch/electrical malfunction.
As far as the smell goes. . .check your vents (with a flashlight) for debris.
Floor vents have a good deal of stuff fall into them throughout the year.
They should be vacuumed out once in a while for fire safety as well as general cleanliness.
You won't be able to get the the majority of the duct system but you can get to the first few feet of each register with the vacuum hose.
That's all I know about heaters without actually looking at the one in question.

Bad Egg Smell

Put your nose near the drains in the bathroom sinks, take a whiff, then run a little bit of water and keep whiffing. Also, check the bathtub drain. It is possible you need a "P" trap, which would keep stinky sewer odors from coming back into the home.

But the whooshing noise also sounds like it could be a water leak somewhere. Review your water bills to see if you are using more water than usual.

Ah ha! I had this a few years ago in a little apartment I lived in. I complained to my landlord of a raunchy odor, and he just laughed. I even made him come over a few times to smell it. He told me to call him when I smelled the smell, and he would come to take a whiff. It was months before he finally did indeed smell the smell I had been speaking of. Still at this point, we didn't know what it was. One day a few weeks later, it was really strong, and I followed it to the bathroom. Upon walking in, the tiles on the floor were dreadfully warm, as if there was a heater beneath my floor. I heard a weird sound just like you said, like a car putting or a gurgling sound. I immediately called the landlord again, and told him about it. He came out right away, and tore the tile off and called his son to come over with a shovel. It took them two days to dig through the ground, and found that the old water pipes beneath were leaking! The pipes were waaay old, and had burst. The smell was the water rotting with the ground and ground yuck of some variety. It took months to fix. A crew had to come out and rip up the old piping and replace it. It was awful, I had wooden boards for a floor, and was scared to death of critters coming up from under the house. But I was glad when it was fixed. They said the whole structure could have been ruined if I hadn't been as persistent as I was to make the landlord smell the smell and take care of the situation. I would get a plumber out there right away, and check your floorboards for warm areas. Good luck, if you don't own the place, get renters insurance. It could take months to fix, and water could get in your house and ruin some of your personal belongings. :)

Sounds like Natural Gas, but, since you said you have none in your house (water heater)? I would have to lean more towards your plumbing, clogged pipes.

we had this problem a while back. It was the plumbing. Cost a tidy little sum to fix... but most definitely worth it! Good luck.
