Some good examples of good rock/metal are: Black Label Society, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, Shadows Fall, Dragonforce, Metal Church, Metallica ('83-'91), Megadeth, Unearth, Lamb of God, Pantera, Opeth, Ozzy, Testament, Anthrax, Children of Bodom, Iced Earth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, In Flames, Primal Fear, Suicidal Tendencies, Trivium, Dream Evil, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Nightwish, Flotsam &Jetsam, Damageplan, Exodus, etc.

System of a Down has been on a decline. Their self titled album and Toxicity were great, but after that has been a huge disappointment.

Those who can shred unbelievable guitar solos (Zakk Wylde) are most appreciated. System of a Down is ok, but they don't have the same talent level as bands who put solos in their work. Real Metal.. is the ability to shred.

The list above me is pretty thorough (don't agree with all of them, but that's just me).

I would certainly have to add Nine Inch Nails!

Some of my favorite tracks by NIN (very hard to choose):

Somewhat Damaged
Wish
Mr. Self Destruct
Reptile
Last
The Big Comedown
Big Man with a Gun

That list could go on for awhile, favorite albums are The Fragile and Broken.
