WE do not know.
First of all it would have been a language we don't know or couldn't pronouce correctly now.
Second it was probably a title or group name.

Like Son, Man,.. or The Blue Team XD

The direction Surnames go in the West is a way to put ownership on people. This is why people get so grumpy and protective of their last names and assureing they are passed on.

The direction they went in the (Far) East was TItles and Locations. So you might have something to indicate your family was popular or one to indicate you lived on a certain mountain.

At some point the West got into the Title thing " Smith" and all that,.. but then it was straight back to ownership wars.

Added: And,.. I can't verify because we can't time travel. You will have to do research for the Far East (see that names meant locations and then when families ruleing combined people some times in entire towns made new names that would combine the high up families details or locations) and look the names Smith and Johnson up in the phone book for hints to what I said about the West,.. the West is Europe and North America.

The 2 most popular surnames in the world are exactly the same as the 2 most popular first names: Muhamad and Ahmed.
The reason is that it was (and still is) an honor to be named after the profit Muhamad in Islam. Therefore people that converted to Islam in the last 14 centuries took these names.
