Ping is an Internet procedure where one computer on the Internet will try to verify that another computer is present. In other words, the first computer will ask the other one, "Are you there?" and the other one will respond. There is a type of attack where a computer asks your computer "Are you there?" so many times and your computer tries to respond so many times that it takes up all of your Internet connection just to respond to these requests. So if you are getting a lot of ping requests you might consider blocking certain IP addresses.
