where Richard is a german name and Dick is a german adjective meaning 'to much fat on the hips'. i could imagine that someone started calling the likewise well portioned versions of 'Richard' to be 'Dick', meaning they are just fat.
And that this has become a kind of standard ?
maybe those 'Richards' calling themselves 'Dick' do not really know german....

We should call all men named Richard Dick, Liar, Man Whore, and other choice words.

one i know chose that because it is his way of sticking it to the man... our boss has tried to cut down our innuendos and harassment... it works and our boss can't tell us not to call dick, his name.
