I would not think so. Sounds fishy to me. Don't show it to them and for sure DO NOT let them photocopy it. If they harrass or try to evict you, California Law is very Renter friendly and you could see a nice payday.

I have the right to ask to see your birth certificate, and I don't even want to rent a room to you. You have as much of an obligation to give me a favorable response as you do your prospective landlord, which is NONE.
I can't imagine why someone would make this a move-in condition. Sounds sketchy. I'd say "thanks, but I'm still looking."
I enter into contracts all the time, including contracts to purchase property, and I have NEVER been asked to show a birth certificate. I live in CA, and used to rent.

Yes, because in order to rent you must sign an agreement which is a legal contract. And in order to be able to enter into a legal contract you must be of legal age. And, also, it may be a way of weeding out illegal aliens.

no unless the prospective renter is way too young to be renting by himself but anyway what has birth certicafe got any connection with renting any place.

They have a right to ask, but you have a right not to provide this information since its not a normal information for rental agreements.

they have the right to free speech and as such they have the right to ask that but the (prospective) tenants have the right to not comply
