some of my immediate family, and a lot of my non-immediate family are racist towards black people. the things they say, i've never heard such obscenities in my life. all the time too. i'm afraid that being exposed to such display for a long time will desensitize me to it, and eventually make me just as racial. i don't want that but i'm stuck and don't know what to do. i've never heard the "N" word used so much in my life, it makes me sick. any ideas?

Stand up for yourself at least in your home. It is a tough situation when it is family. I had a similar incident where the "N" word was always being said. I didn't feel comfortable confronting the group at the time but when they came to my house and the word was used, I told them that it offended me and that I don't want it used in my house (my house, my rules). Of course I got the typical response of "well they use that word so why can't I". I just said "I don't care, it offends ME so respect me and my home and don't use it around me or in my house" I didn't want to engage the topic so I went about doing something in the other room. I was surprised that they respected my wishes and didn't make a big deal of it. They probably still use the term (b/c they are idiots) but never around me.

I hope this helps!! :-) Good luck

What you are doing right now is the best thing to combat racism. You probably won't be able to convince your family members to be non-racist, as they are too firmly entrenched within their own beliefs. However, by staying true to your beliefs, you do not pass those racist thoughts onto the next generation. It may be difficult to stomach, but I am sure you will prevail. It sounds like you have a strong enough aversion to racist thinking to help you avoid it.

Well if this is the only predominant bad trait in your family and friends, you should ignore it for you cannot be expected to change the way of thinking of so many people.
What matters is that you think they are being racist; this is evidence enough that you have the strength not be raked in with those who hurl abuses at coloured people.
Take comfort in who you are and stand up for what you believe in; prejudice is ignorance so try laughing at the ignorant.
Cheers.

You act as if this is a recent thing. Do you believe it? If no, then you won't be persuaded to be racist. You can't be forced to be what you don't already want to be :)
