To be a bit more specific, I was walking barefoot at home today and stood on something very tiny (similar to a splinter). My foot is not swollen, but it's very painful to walk on.

Soak your foot in water w/soda, or if you don't have any use bath salts, green soap or just plain water. Sometimes it'll even come out by itself and if not you can often find it and get it out more easily when the skin is softened.

Use needle nose tweezers or a pin but try not to dig around too much, don't do more damage to the skin than necessary.

Having an up to date tetanus shot is always a good idea, not just for barefooters (a rusty nail is not the only way you can get a tetanus infection, it can enter the skin through other wounds too, when gardening, when working around animals, etc). But other than that I wouldn't run to a doctor for a splinter unless it started to look red or throb.

Have a housemate or friend look if you can't reach well, for the foot isn't always an easy place to dig for a splinter.

Can you be more specific about what it is that is embedded in your foot? If something is actually in your foot like your post implies then you need to go to ER and get it removed. Your post was not real clear.

I would give it a day to come out on its own and heal up. If it doesn't, then go to your doctor and have him get it out for you. You don't want to get an infection. At the worst you could lose your foot.

If you're not up to date with your Tetanus shot you should probably be worried. If something is stuck in your foot you should go see a doctor because that just can't be good!
