Speaking impartially, Sony Vaios are regarded as some of the best laptop computers available. They can be had, in some instances, for less than $1000.

Hi,

Well every pc can be configured for different things for less than a $1000.00. If you only need a pc for internet and using spreadsheets well than a $500 pc will be good enough for you.
If you are going to edit videos and pictures you will need more ram and a higher frequency cpu etc. So if you have a specific job for the pc to do please let us know to better help you.

But if you are just looking for an overall good pc for less than $1000.00 Dell and HP are your best bet.

Probably a Mac mini (from US$549 without monitor) or an iMac (from US$999 with monitor). Those would be my choices, anyway, at least for desktop systems. For a server, get some cheap parts and build a Linux box.

Best with most packages of software and bundled with a Vista coupon so you get the free upgrade. Haven't seen one I would recommend yet.

Ask again around Spring Break.

I've had two Gateways at home and couldn't be happier. We had Dell, Compaq, and HP at work and they all had big problems as did my brothers Toshiba.
