no, smoking will actually hinder a screamer. any musician who takes his voice seriously will try hard to stay away from cigarettes but not all can. there are plenty of singers who smoke but believe me, they wish they didn't and they definitely don't think it helps. it can make your talking voice cool and raspy though

Serious singers don't smoke. Smoking doesn't effect your vocal chords, but does effect your lungs and air capacity.
Alcohol can give someone a raspy voice, but it comes with a high price. It can cut down the length of your career, simply because alcohol is a poison. It dehydrates you and could damage your liver and kidneys.......you don't see many metal shouters having long careers. The ones that do, like James Hatfield or Brian Johnson stopped drinking because of the damage they've done.
Although they're not metal singers, the best examples I can think of are Rod Stewart and Frankie Miller, who both used plenty of alcohol in their early days, and have voices like 20 grit sandpaper.

The first Metal bands of Birmingham, England (Zepplin, Black Sabbath) I'm sure they got some of their vocal characteristics because of the metal shavings and smoke filling that industrial town. Smoking could create a raspy sound, especially after you get throat cancer and need to have your larynx removed. The portable electronic voice box with the hole in the throat is a great look / sound for a musician.

No. It will damage your lungs and you will not be able to belt out the notes. I read once that Steve perry wanted a raspy sound on a solo project so he made sure he very tired...singing just after he woke up. I think that is why those rockers sleep all day.lol

Do you want to sound like Alexisonfire, or like a death metal vocalist?

Either way, smoking will totally ruin your voice. If you want to sound like Alexisonfire or Slipknot or whatever, just scream, it's easy.

If you want to sing death metal, there is a technique. It has to come from the back of your throat. Aim for sound and pitch, not volume. If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. You can also gurgle a bit, or a lot, depending on how you want to sound.

Possibly, for a period of time, but smoking has a very negative effect on vocal control over time.

This combined with the obvious risks of lung, throat, mouth etc. would seem to be enough to support a negative decision on smoking to change voice.

Yeah yeah smoke 9 packs a day and try screaming without sounding like a fat man who just ran a mile. This is the dumbest thing Iv ever seen. Are you a poser or something, because you sound like it.

no. much to the common thought, it doesn't. neither does alcohal. the best thing that you can do to scream like a metal singer is to practice a lot and drink room temperature water before you sing. too warm will burn your throat and too cold will freeze it. room temp water is the best! i guarantee it.

It takes vocal lessons and not everyone can do it, but smoking doesn't help you do anything except die early.
