It depends on how much oil you are talking about getting out. You can wash the carpet using something like Pinesol, that has real pine oil in it, to break down the oil. Murphy's Soap also works to an extent, and is a vegetable based soap without the pine smell. They all break down oil, and then a regular carpet detergeant in a carpet cleaning machine will remove that from the carpet. But if you are talking that you spilled a quart of 30 weight, it isn't likely to all come out and leave no sign behind. And you are talking major fire hazard there. If that's the case, your only real option is to remove the carpet and replace it completely. Even small spots on a light colored carpet will leave a stain behind, darker carpet is not so noticeable. But be prepared for a stain in any case.

Hi
I would recommend using a wet vac and slowly pour hot water (almost to the boiling point) on the spot and vacuum it up at the same time (this will open up the dye ports on the carpet fibre releasing the stain. and remove the residue from the carpet). If the stain is still visible than use a little carpet spotter on it or Dawn dishwashing liquid (2 or 3 drops into one cup of water) and repeat step 1. The stain may come back in a few days so you may have to do this a few times. Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet. At this point if the stain is still there please call a carpet cleaner.

Depends on the color and fabric of the carpet. In most cases, replacement is your only option. One step you can try is using a COLOR SAFE BLEACH such as CLOROX2 in your carpet shampoo machine and go over the stain MANY MANY times. Using a carpet steamer machine will increase the effectiveness of this method. Mind you, even this may not work, but short of replacement, this is your best option. Good luck.

Try brake and parts cleaner from any auto parts store. My husband spilled motor oil in trunk of our car, it was absorbed by a pair of my jeans. I tried washing them in hot water but it didn't work. The brake and parts cleaner removed the oil even after the pants had been washed and dried. I use it on all greasy stains. It can be difficult to get the chemical smell out sometimes.
