i had one last year the scar was only one and a half inches wide they went in through the top in part of my belly button the scar was not even stitched shut they used some kind of glue that lasted over a week well probably cause i wasnt allowed to wash the area, did they use a scope on you or did they do it the old fashion way just cutting you open? my scar stayed dry and funny feeling for about 6mos even using lotions , How long did you have your hernia before the repair

i spent alot of time researching the procedure and drs with experiencewith using the new mesh material not just sewing it together which has a high problem rate

Scarring is sort of a personal thing. I've had appendix out, hernia repair, all sorts of bad cuts, and have no noticeable scars. But other people get those really pink/purple scars (I believe it is more common for African-Americans). So first question is whether it seems like normal scarring for your body? Scars/incisions may feel funny (itch/pull) for quite a while, especially in areas like the abdomen where there is lots of movement. Question is whether it is painful, or just sort of pulling a bit. Lastly, you need to watch out for infection -- is there a lot of redness beyond the scar tissue itself? In any case ask your doctor.

A month is too soon to know just how your scar is going to turn out.
When suturing is done, there are 3-4 layers of them depending how just how your particular surgeon does his hernia repair and alot of what you are feeling are your suture lines down through the layers of your skin.
The sutures found under your skin are as a general rule asorbable and it takes a bit of time for them to absorb and until then you will feel that hardness.
Eventually this will resolve but it is hard to determine just how well it will resolve but if you take care of the incision as the Dr instructs you,I think it will turn out better than you are thinking it will.

I used straight Vitamin E on my thyroid removal scar (on my neck) and it really made it virtually disappear over time. It did take at least a year for it to stop looking kind of "pink" and for the hardness underneath to smooth out.

I just bought Vitamin E pills and would pop it open with a straight pin and squeeze it on before bedtime!

The scar will never go away completely but depending on the talent of the surgeon it might be barely noticeable. There are creams at your nearby pharmacy that are over the counter which help scares to heal more unnoticeable.
