HI everyone

I just bought my first car. I wonder what is the differnce among Drive 4, 3, 2, and 1 on the shifting thing?

Thanks a lot

it has to do with the size of the gears and how they affect your RPMs. if your car wasn't an automatic and you could keep it in first you would notice that your RPMs would continue to get higher and higher as you go faster but this changes when the larger gears kick in. It also has to do with the torque being passed through your transmission which aids in the movement of the car itself. your tranny and gears are very important to your car.

As far as your car actually having the 4,3,2,1, and Drive I think means your car is a actually a mix between Auto and Manual. If you want you can shift yourself through the gears and you will either hear your car revving too high and that's when you shift to the next gear or pay attention to the RPM's and once they reach about 3.5(1000's) then go to the next gear.

However, since you are asking this question and it is your first car, I would leave it in Automatic mode and in Drive.

gears 1,2and 3 are lower gears and are for strength and not speed, like for towing heavy loads, or climing steep inclines, 4th gear is a high gear and there fore it is for speed but cars have over drive which acts as another gear but in order for it to engage automaticaly the car needs to be on D or 4.

usually there's only three gears in a car, the third gear is o drive, the second gear will not go up to the third gear, and the first gear will not go up to the second gear. the first and seond gear is supposed to be for steep inclines or pulling tow.and drive has all the gears
