As said above, Hester was drafted as a "punt return specialist." Look at his stats, he hasn't had many Kick-off Returns at all (he only started doing them regularly in the last few games.

Look at Hester's college videos on youtube, especially the game against Duke, it truly shows his ability.

Vasher is a great returner as well, but the Bears need to keep their secondary healthy, especially after the retirement of Jerry Azumah. Bears drafted a guy soley for returns (which can get you injured quickly) so that Vasher could focus on his role as a CB.

Vasher is a much better defender than Hester... tonight Vasher sat out and Hester took his place, Tory Holt got a 1 yard TD catch as Hester was defending him.

Because Nathan Vasher is their starting CB. they do not want to risk him being injured whenever he tries to get a KR or a PR, because KR and PRs are very dangerous because people are flying at you at full speed. Hester was drafted for his KRing abilities mostly, so that Vasher is not needed to return kicks and risk injuries

As mentioned, Vasher is a starting CB, and why risk injury to him on special teams. I think the Hester pick has paid off.

I guess they knew he was going to be amazing. It's amazing how the Bears knew that Devin Hester was going to be amazing.

because they'd probably prefer to have a great return game without having to run their top corner out there and maybe have him get hurt. hester is basically just a returner, while vasher is a great corner. they want as much value out of vasher as they can get as a db. this way they have a lot more depth at returner

They drafted Hester for his kick and punt return abilities. Not for his defensive abilities. Paid off big!!!

Does his record-setting season not answer that question for you? I know it's hard to know in advance that he'd do what he's done, but he's infinitely better than Vasher, so the Bears wouldv've been ignorant to pass him up, even if it would've been for the sole purpose of depth and/or returning kicks.

Probably the fact that they needed more depth at KR. Seems to have paid off...6 return TDs total this season after tonight's game!!
