It really doesn't matter about age limits - we have all ages in our family, I just want to get them a nice little selection of board games for everyone to play with whenever we visit.

The best five board games I can recommend are as follows:

5) Monopoly: It's all around the best game for learning math and money, and it's been around for over decades!
4) Scrabble: As others have said it's a great game to help enhance vocabulary and spelling--some foreign friends of mine play it all the time!
3) Stratego (or Chess): More importantly than teaching people to interact on a mano-e-mano level, these games help teach strategy and all-around thinking skills.
2) Trivial Pursuit: It isn't a very advanced game, but it's fun to learn the trivia it has in it and then impress friends later on.
1) (Beyond) Balderdash: There isn't a better game out there that will inspire creativity, imagination, and just plain ol' fun! It's great for all ages (especially college students)!

I hope this list will help you out some!

They maybe a bit nerdy however i might decide upon that over a pal with a hangover.

The 5 absolute musts? Here's my general list.

1 Scrabble
2 Monopoly
3 Apples to Apples
4 Settlers of Catan
5 Sorry

A nice mix of games, both classic and new, in a variety of styles and mostly suitable for all (or at least most) ages.

These are the games we have and my parents had the same ones when I was a kid...so I guess these are the classics: Monopoly, Life, Parchessi, Clue, Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. I think Boulder Dash and Apples to Apples are really good games, too.

Definately Scattergories,
Uno or SkipBo either are easy and fun
Balder Dash
Yahtzee
Who Wants to be a Millionare?

I like Monopoly, but it usually takes forever, and someone ends up getting pissed by the end of the game.

Yahtzee - ALWAYS FUN
Apples to Apples - This is a great game for a group
Scattergories - fun for all!
Cranium - this is very entertaining!
catch phrase - great game but if your parents are older they won't like this game - very fast paced!
Phase 10 is a great alternative to catch phrase otherwise

Also I would suggest buying extra dice and a set of cards!

Monopoly
Stratego
Clue
Sorry
Life

These five games will provide hours of fun for your family. If you watch the sales papers, you can get some of these for half off.
