Why is it when you're sleeping it's called drool, but when you're awake it's called spit?

Because Spit leaves your mouth with force, and you need to be Awake to hurl it out of you. Drool does nothing more than rely on gravity to come out. When your asleep, its easier for gravity to hit.
So the moisture in your mouth comes out 2 different ways, needing 2 different names....... (don't ya just love the English language)

Because of the way it moves out of your mouth. When your asleep it drools down your face. You can also drool when your awake, obviously. Spit is basically the action of spitting. how else is it coming out of your mouth? Its also called saliva when your masticating your food or salivating around food.

Even if you're awake it's still drool. Drool comes out involuntarily while spit is something that you... well spit out.

I think it has a strong sociological aspect to it. Its drool when it leaks out of your mouth, spit when you force it out, and saliva when it just sits there.... yet your so right its all the same liquid! People try to justify things by looking at them differently, I believe that this may be why.

You don't consciously control drool but u can choose to spit. Also, spitting is done with force while drool just kinda... slips out.
