This isn't algae, it's fungus. This should demonstrate that petstores, unfortunately, do not know what they are talking about. They are only there to sell fish, 99% of the time nothing they say is true.

Treat the fungus with Maracyn-2. Make sure you keep the water very clean. Fungus is usually caused by an overcrowded tank / dirty water, so make sure you do weekly water changes and gravel vacs.

I don't know your tank size or which fish you have, but it would be worth looking them up and making sure they can fit in your tank. Some fish that are sold as little babies in the petstores can grow to 2 or 3 feet long! They will eventually get sick in a tank that is too small.

Very low does of rock salt or algae cleaner from the pet store.
I know rock salt doesn't sound right but I used it all the time and didn't kill my fish, it kills the algae.

Clean the fish tank, but don't clean it all the time it is actually good for your fish, clean it every 7 days or less. There are cleaners you might want to go to a local pet shop and ask them about fish tank cleaners.
