but what if the child does take good care of the pet? trains them cleans up after them feeds them and loves them but still parents don't want pets. it happens you know...when parents just hate pets.

I agree..people who don't like pets also lack nurturing capabilities...If they don't know how to show affection to animals they won't be able to show affection to their kids.

ok points taken...pets wreck everything in their way. But pets can be trained right? and I think parents shouldn't think about how the pet would wreck everything in sight but how the pet will love their children and them unconditionally.

I'm sorry for those offended by this. But in my case this is true. My mom and dad doesn't know how to show affection and love towards pets and they don't know how to show affection to us too. My mom doesn't want a cat rubbing its body against her feet and she too doesn't like it when I show her affection. She says its not the way that I should act. Never even hugs us. Unlike pets who give unconditional love.

Because they usually end up taking care of the pet and paying all of the vet bills.

I am a mother and I love pets. All animals and I encourage my children to love them too. We have a lot of animals and climbing - I cannot understand why some parents dont like animals in the house. It has been proven that the therepy of animals is enormously positive and having pets encourages children to think of some other living things needs instead of their own. Yes there are some down sides - puppes chew things and pee everywhere and cats scratch furniture but they are just little things - if a child feels angry hugging hteir puppy is good therepy, and if they are scared to go to bed then sleeping with the puppy is comforting. I dont mind cleaning up after the pet when the children wont and when I look at my sleeping child with his puppy all is forgiven. Also a child Remembering to feed a living creature and act responsibly can only be a positive thing. I believe you are never quite so lonely with animals at home. I want more pets - all the more the merrier - maybe a giraffe next time (lol) By

I find Mac's attitude deeply offensive.
I have 3 'kids' all happy and well adjusted. The eldest two work for a cancer charity and with disabled people respectively, the youngest is an autistic teenager.
I have not had a cat or dog since my daughter was two. I have to work for a living and I'd no more leave a cat or dog alone all day than I would my child. I also recognise that there are aspects of pet care I can't deal with and I feel leaving your pets to foul the streets is a poor way of dealing with it. Many of my neighbours disagree. On top of this I have a severe allergy to cats - rashes, asthma attacks etc.
People need to realise that having a pet, like having a child is a responsibility. Parents who know that they can't deal with both are only being sensible.
Oh and not having pets doesn't make me an animal hater; I like pets (including cats) as long as they belong to other people.
Neither my husband or myself are serial killers.

Of the ones I know, few hate having pets about. I live in a dog street. Two at my house, five at the house on one side, and two on the other. Who knows how many there are total in this street alone.
Good point, some people do not like animals anyway. They do not know what they are missing.

Because having children to clean up after can be enough for some people without having pets as well. Its just more work.

I have a 4 year old girl and she certainly makes enough of her own. However, I did just get 2 puppies. I don't hate pets but having puppies is like having another toddler in the house.

Money! They cost money!
They bind you to the house - can't just take off for a weekend or a holiday.
Pets are more inconvenient than children! Haha. LOL
Children make all sorts of promises about looking after a pet. They never stick to their promises. Ever.
A house with a dog always STINKS too. Ditto un-neutered cats.
Rodents stink. Etc., etc..

Parents usually end up being the ones who have to take care of the pets no matter how much children promise they will take care of the pet. I have also known kids who have gotten pets only to loose interest in them and then have there parents have to take care of them. Pets also make a mess and cost money to feed.

I agree with all that has been said about parents having to clean up after the pets, also end up walking puppies, coz the child/ren who wanted it and promised to look after it, suddenly lose interest. I totally disagree with mac's bullcrap. Seems to me that she would force others to have pets just because she has pets, or, risk being called un-nurturing or whatever. well pppppfffffftttttttt to her answer.

All the reasons everyone has said, including the fact that despite a diligent child's efforts to look after it, puppies have the tendency to chew up gardens and other things that parents will have spent either a lot of time or money on.

I have a theory that you might be interested in, I believe that people who do not love/like animals- that show an unnatural disdain to domestic pets (and I'm not talking snakes- cats, dogs, birds, especially), that they should not be allowed to have children. They lack NURTURING tendencies--think about all the people you know that HATE animals and I will show you someone who will be abusive to their wife, family, and kids. Serial killers are known to be sadistic animal torturers and killers as children before they moved on to bigger game-- people.

I am a parent x2 and I have had 4 dogs, 3 birds and no cats. I love all animals and if it were up to me, I would be a vegetarian.

What do you think of my theory on animal haters????

I think parents do not hate pets. They do hate that they - when it comes down to it - have to take all responsibility for it as most kids let go of their promeses after a few weeks.

They (parents) need to feed it, pay for the food, pay for the vet, walk it, clean its cage / litter / kennel ... While kids only have the fun times!
