Cherry barbs aren't aggressive in the least. They are completely innofensive and docile.
In fact, we are beginning to question whether they are really barbs at all.
They don't school per se, but they do appreciate having other cherry barbs around (safety in numbers!) so consider getting a few more. They may also develop a deeper colouration if they are interacting with other cherry barbs.

Barbs are aggressive in general, but Cherry Barbs are one of the exceptions. You were probably told they'd destroy your fish because all they really heard was 'barb'.

As mentioned they aren't schooling fish the way most barbs are, but they do best in pairs, and by having a pair they can keep each other company, as a lone specimen would stand more of a chance of having nothing better to do but pick on other fish (and even still, they tend not to).

Cherry barbs are actually far more peaceful than other barbs. I've read in several places as well that they don't like to school, so it's probably okay that you only have one (whereas it wouldn't be with other barbs, which do become increasingly aggressive if kept alone.) They are however much more shy and you need to be sure you have lots of plants and rocks in your tank so your cherry can hide when he feels threatened or insecure.
